A Canvas integration uses an approved Canvas account to read or write data within the account scope you select.

Prepare Canvas

Ask your Canvas administrator to create a Canvas Role that can be used, by
  1. Logging into Canvas and navigating to the root account
  2. Click on Permissions in the menu, then choose Account Roles.
  3. Click Add Role.
  4. Give the role a name and click save.
    1. The Canvas Admin account, must have direct login access (no SSO)
  5. Within the Root Account> Account Permissions, turn on the permissions needed for this role
  6. Then, go to each Sub-Account, that courses will be archived from and enable the sub-account permissions for this new role.
Required Canvas permissions depend on whether K16 reads courses, restores content, or syncs content back to Canvas. Review the workflow with your K16 contact and Canvas administrator instead of copying a broad legacy permission list.
  1. In the Root Account, go to Settings> Admin
  2. Scroll down and click + Account Admins
  3. In the Add More dropdown, choose the role you just created (e.g. Canvas Archiving)
  4. In the Input box enter: “Last Name, First Name” <email_alias@example.edu>
  5. Click Continue, then click “Ok Looks Good, Add This 1 User”
  6. You will receive an email from Canvas regarding the account creation. Follow the instructions to finish setting up the account and accept the Canvas user agreement.

Creating the integration in Scaffold

Select Canvas

Open Settings > Integrations > New integration. Select LMS, then Canvas.

Name and LMS Data Direction

Enter a Friendly name. Choose Source when K16 pulls from Canvas or Destination when K16 pushes to Canvas.

Validate and create

Select Validate & continue. Resolve URL, account, or scope issues, then select Create integration.

Note

  • Once the Canvas integration is created, 10 access tokens will be created from the utility account that was used in the integration. Depending on your Canvas email settings, you may get up to 10 emails regarding the creation of the access token.
  • Institutions that require MFA for Canvas Admin accounts will also need to enter the TOTP Secret in the integration. Visit our MFA for integrations help desk article for step by step instructions on setting up MFA.
