# Manage business glossary terms

> Define shared data language and connect each term to relevant catalog blueprints.

The business glossary gives your workspace a shared vocabulary for metrics, concepts, and institutional definitions. A term can identify the blueprint that defines it and link to other blueprints where the term applies.

## Browse terms

Open **Documentation** > **Business Glossary**. Use **Filter business glossary…** to search terms and use **Status** to narrow the list to published or draft content.

The table shows:

* **Term** and version;
* **Description** and tags;
* **Defined By** blueprint;
* referenced blueprints;
* publication status and last update.

Select a term to review its status, owner, definition, tags, and **Catalog Coverage**.

## Create a term

<Note>**New Term** appears only when you have business glossary management access.</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a term">Select **New Term**.</Step>

  <Step title="Name and define it">
    Enter a unique term name and a concise definition. Explain what the term means, not only where
    it is stored.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add tags">Add search terms that help people discover the definition.</Step>

  <Step title="Choose the defining blueprint">
    Set **Defined By Blueprint** when one catalog blueprint is the authoritative implementation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add references">
    Search **Referenced blueprints** and select other catalog entities where the term is used.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save or publish">
    Save a draft for review or publish the term when its definition and coverage are ready.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The form lets you leave blueprint links empty, but adding them makes the term more useful. Use one authoritative **Defined By Blueprint** and add references only when the relationship is meaningful.

## Edit and publish

Open a term and select **Edit**. If the term has a pending draft, use **Edit draft** to continue that version.

The term detail menu also provides:

* **Copy term** to start from the current content;
* **Version control** to compare published and historical versions;
* **Delete** to remove the term after confirmation.

Version control compares the description, defining blueprint, tags, and references. Select **Restore Published** to create a published version from the selected history. Review warnings about changed defining blueprints or removed references before restoring.

<Warning>
  Deleting a glossary term removes the shared definition. It does not delete the blueprints linked
  to that term.
</Warning>

## Write useful definitions

* State the business meaning in the first sentence.
* Define the population, time window, and exclusions when they affect interpretation.
* Avoid restating a column name without explaining it.
* Link to the blueprint that implements the definition.
* Update references when a blueprint is replaced or renamed.

Use [Catalog entity details](/datax/catalog/entity-details) to verify a blueprint before linking it to a term.
